The Homeschool Year

In 2020 my kids stayed home from school and we homeschooled for a little over a year. I had already taken a lot of time off work when my youngest was small, and I had one rule: when a kid asks a question, you do not brush it off. You answer as well as you can, and then you look it up together, because the answer you give from memory is sometimes wrong.

One week we were on cells. What is a cell, what are its parts, and then: what is the largest one? There is a single cell you can hold in your hand. Another week it was taxonomy: what is a tree, what is a kangaroo, and how do kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus and species fit together. Then stars, black holes, molecules. Every one of those subjects has more astonishing facts than a kid can carry.

So I started making the posters I wanted on our wall. Two-thirds of each one is the subject itself, drawn properly. The other third, around the edges and along the bottom, is the facts that made us stop and say: wait, really?

How A Fact Gets Onto A Poster

  1. It starts as a question one of us asked.
  2. I find the answer in a source a scientist would accept: NASA, NOAA, a natural history museum, a peer-reviewed paper.
  3. If good sources disagree, the poster says so, or the fact stays off.
  4. The source goes on the poster's page and on the sources page, and my name goes on the edition.
  5. When the science moves, the edition changes, and the sources page says what changed.
